Proportion and Scale......

Proportion and Scale: A sense of proper proportion creates order and harmony among the elements in visual construction.

Golden Section: The ration between two sections of a line or two dimensions of a plane, to where the lesser of the two is greater as the greater is to the sum of the both.  (a/b = b/a+b)

The Orders: The Classical proportioning of relating a building to the size of it’s columns.  This creates harmony between all parts of the building.

Renaissance Theories: Renaissance architects believed that architecture was mathematics translated into spatial units.  There are specific plan shapes for rooms and their heights can be determined by the length of their walls.

The Modular: The use of the human body to determine the number of units within a space.  It has infinite numbers and combinations.

The “Ken”: A traditional Japanese unit of measure in which the size of a room can be determined by the number of floormats it can accommodate.  The mats remain in a one:two modular form and arranged in a number of ways for any given room size.

Anthropomorphic: The way the human body is affected by the proportion and relation of different elements.  Because men, women and children have different proportions, consideration for differing body size must be taken into account to accommodate for this.

Scale: The appearance of how something relates to another object.  Does not depend on actual dimensions of objects.  The relation of windows to the façade, to the roof and the foundation are all taken into account.
